HIMCM (High School Mathematical Contest in Modeling) is a unique US-based Competition in which teams of 2 to 4 students look at given real-life situation and write a 20-page long paper in English that details their research, technical findings and open-ended solutions.
This provides students with an opportunity to work as a team in a contest that will stimulate and improve their mathematical problem-solving proficiency as well as develop their writing skills.
JKFZ CIS made its maiden debut with 3 teams mainly from the sixth Form, choosing one from two questions: (1) 3rd generation “Cozy Smart House” automated cooling and heating system, or (2) “Roller-Coaster Matrix and System” that objectively rank amusement parks in the world.
785 teams from 283 schools all around the world took part in this 21st Annual instalment of the competition. We are pleased to announce that two of our teams(Zongcheng Zhang, Yunxiang Bai, Zhongyuan Zhou, Daoyuan Li) & (Danni Huang, Jiayi Huang, Yangxuanri Yang, Tianyu Yan)came in “Meritorious” (Top 20%) and the third (Shen Lin, Jingyi Xiao, Xin Lv)as “Successful Participant”. It is quite an achievement, considering the fact that it was our first experience of such competition; the top winners were again from the same schools in the previous years of the competition.
It is the belief of JKFZ CIS that ultimately, the reward does not necessarily come in the form of prize and award; rather, it is the process of working as a Team, taking head on in a resilient manner a new challenge in unfamiliar territories, that shapes our students for the future.
Please enjoy this opportunity to see the students’ papers; You will be fascinated by some of their ideas and creativity, and wonder upon the hardship they underwent during a ten-day school period. Once again, thank you and congrats to the students.
The problems students were presented with are given here.
